Doggie Breath Buster Tips
Does your furry friend have horrible halitosis? Do you cower when Fido showers you with puppy kisses? Well, then perhaps it is time to take a look inside his mouth and see if it’s time for a dental cleaning. Chances are that if he is like the average pet, then oral disease may have already started. It is known that, over 80% of dogs and cats have periodontal disease by the age of 2 years.

What signs of dental disease should you look for?
  • Yellow or brown discoloration on teeth
  • Bad breath
  • Red or bleeding gums
  • Change in eating pattern (i.e. prefers soft foods, won’t chew on toys or bones)

Dental cleanings are important preventative care step for our pets overall health. During a dental cleaning, teeth are ultrasonically scaled, polished, and examined for abnormalities. Dental x-rays may be taken to investigate problem teeth further. Most pets should have their teeth cleaned every year, and some with severe periodontal disease warrant cleanings every 6 months.

In addition to regular cleanings, pet owners can take steps at home to battle pet dental disease. Tooth brushing is the still the best preventative measure and should be done 3-7 times a week using pet toothpaste. Other home dental care steps include dental rinses, special dental diets, and dental chews. A periodontal vaccine (Porphyromonas) may be used to further battle periodontal disease. The best advice is to use a combination of several dental steps and to be consistent with preventative dental care.
