Elementary School Visit
Thank you so much to the wonderful students at Parson’s Elementary who invited Dr. White to participate in their career day. Dr. White and her parrot friend, Kiwi, visited several classes and spoke about careers in veterinary medicine. And special thanks goes out to Brianna M. who helped as Dr White’s student usher for the day and who made sure the Doc kept moving in the right direction.

The Bite of Heartworm Disease- in Las Vegas?
Heartworm disease is an infection passed to our dogs by a simple mosquito bite. The infection is unapparent until severe illness arises. Treatment of heartworm disease requires is costly and risky at times. Treating an infected dog for heartworms can cost approximately $1000. Heartworm treatment can be complicated and will require strict confinement of the pet for several months. Fortunately there is safe, affordable and simple means of keeping your dog against heartworm disease by monthly preventative.

For many years it was believed that heartworm disease wasn’t a risk to Las Vegas dogs, but that has changed. In fact heartworm disease has been diagnosed in all 50 states. Heartworm positive dogs can easily be moved from state to state. And our changing local environments provide ample mosquito homes in areas such as golf courses, ponds, and stagnant pools.

The best recommendation is to keep your dog safe with year-round heartworm protection and once a year heartworm testing. For more information about the most current recommendations visit the American Heartworm Society’s web site at www.heartwormsociety.org.
