Pet of the Month
Say hello to "Taffy," our August 2007 Pet of the Month. "Taffy" is a
familiar face at our hospital and always a joy to see. Visit our
website to see her bio and photo at www.lmah.net.
New Doggie Weight Loss Drug
Current statistics estimate that 25-40% of all dogs in the U.S. are
overweight. That accounts for over 17 million dogs across the
country. Obesity not only shortens a pet's life, but also increases
the risk of serious medical conditions such as cardiovascular
disease, diabetes, liver disease, and orthopedic injuries. The
formula for weight loss in pets includes decreasing calories using a
weight loss diet, eliminating treats, and increasing exercise. And
now there is a new medication called Slentrol that can help dogs
loose the weight they should.
Slentrol works to decrease the pet's appetite and reduces the
overall food intake. It does this by blocking fat absorption in the
dog's intestinal tract and triggers a feeling of fullness for the
pet. And while there is no magic cure for obesity, Slentrol is
showing great promise in becoming a useful part of an overall weight
management program for dogs. Slentrol cannot be used in cats, and
can only be prescribed with a veterinarian's supervision. For more
information call the office at 645-3116 or visit the Pfizer
company's information site at

Animal Radio Network
If you are an animal lover and listen to the radio, then you may
have heard of Animal Radio Network. Animal Radio covers animal
related topics 24-7 such as pet medical problems, pet products,
community pet issues, and animal interest stories. And this month
LMAH's Dr. Debbie White is included in their programming as she
discusses "Antidepressants for Your Pets".
And although we do not have a local radio affiliate that carries
Animal Radio here in Las Vegas, you can tune in via computer, cell
phone, and other methods. Visit their website to learn more at
www.animalradio.com.
