'Tis the Season For Pet Safety!
It is the time of year for holiday shopping, cards and parties. But in the midst of this busy holiday season, take a moment to ensure your pet's safety during the holidays. Keep a look out for these common holiday items that can pose a safety danger for your pet.

Toxic Holiday Plants: The toxicity of the Poinsettias plant is overstated. In fact, poinsettias aren't much of a danger to animals. Pets that chew on a poinsettia may have some stomach upset, but not likely suffer a serious illness. However, holly and mistletoe can be very toxic to pets if ingested.

Electrical Cords: Chewing on electrical cords and holiday lights can result in oral burns or electrocution. Keep electrical cords out of your pet's view and reach. Run electrical cords thru PVC piping to hide that chewing temptation from your critters.

Those Shiny Ribbons: My how cats do love to play with that shiny tinsel and the dangling ribbons! But when cats accidentally ingest these items, it can lead to an intestinal blockage and an emergency holiday surgery. Cat owners are advised to avoid decorating with tinsel altogether and to keep the gift wrapping with the kitty in mind.

The Holiday Smells: We may know the fire danger of decorative candles, but don't expect your pets to. Cats that walk near candles on tables or counters can accidentally knock them over and pose a fire risk. The vigorously wagging tail also can knock candles off of low lying tables.

Liquid potpourri can be inviting to some pets, but can cause injury to the skin, eyes, and chemical burns to the mouth.

Christmas Tree Water: Keep your pets away from the tree stand. The fertilizers commonly added to Christmas tree water can cause stomach upset for our pets. And that old, stagnant water in the tree stand may be a home of bacteria that can cause gastrointestinal upset if ingested.
