They are smart — even clever — and they know what they want and, in some cases, how to get it. Characterizations of their features include “expressive,” “clownish” and “cartoonish,” but a pug is not just another pretty face. Veterinarian and author Debbie White explains they are that and much more, including intensely loyal and affectionate — sometimes to a correctable fault. Despite a dedication capable of producing an invisible umbilical cord, a pug has a line and knows when its owner has crossed it. Against unwelcome restraint or touching, White explains, the dogs “warble and scream, mimicking a shrieking child,” or “produce alien-like vocalizations best described as a screaming turkey — in a full-fledged tantrum.
