Please welcome Roxana, one of the newest externs to join the family at Lone Mountain Animal Hospital!
Roxana, born and raised in California, always had a soft spot for animals. While she wasn’t aiming to become a vet at a young age, she developed an interest for the field as she grew. Her father would take her to zoos, when they travelled, which fueled a passion to work with animals. However, it wasn’t until she took a zoology class in high school that she officially decided she wanted to become a veterinarian.
Roxana attended UC Davis for her undergrad where she received a Major in Animal Science and a Minor in Theater Arts. Currently, she attends the University of Missouri and is set to graduate in May 2022. On top of her classes, she has also volunteered at the Saint Louis Human Society and has done an externship at the Dickerson Park Zoo in Springfield, Missouri.
She learned about the externship program at Lone Mountain Animal Hospital from the Hospital Administrator, Mike Falconer, when he visited her school to speak on the opportunity. “This was perfect for me. I love Las Vegas,” She explains, “I’m from California so it’s close to home.” While doing her externship she hopes to gain experience working with small animals and exotics. She also wants to learn more about emergency medicine. “I feel like, with schools, you mostly learn through lectures. We didn’t actually get many hands-on opportunities,” she said.
When not working or studying, Roxana likes to go hiking, photography, travelling or trying out new foods. At the end of the day, she goes home to her four pet cats, Vanilla, Kovu, Jessy and Buzz.
