Canine Influenza

Canine Flu is a newer virus, because of this all dogs are vulnerable to infection. This virus causes a respiratory infection in dogs. Exactly two strains of the virus have been detected in the U.S. including strains (CIV H3N8 and CIV H3N2) These are two distinctly different viruses from different origins.

These viruses are highly contagious. As an infected dog coughs, sneezes and barks Canine Influenza is spread through its viral respiratory secretions in the air. Once in the air, the virus may attach to objects and is now considered an environmental contaminant through viral shedding. The virus can live on surfaces up to 48 hours on hours on clothing, for 24 and on hands for 12hours. This virus causes coughing, sneezing, fever and can develop into life-threating pneumonia.

Once infected, the incubation period is between two and four days. Dogs are considered highly contagious during the incubation period and as the viral shedding reaches peak levels. Because CI strain H3N2 can cause viral shedding for 26 days, dogs infected with the strain must be isolated for at least 21 days. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, infected dogs must be isolated for the entire 21 days even if symptoms clear up sooner as the virus may still be active.
In 2015 an outbreak of CIV H3N2 was detected in Chicago and surrounding areas. Over the years, the dog flu has spread to over 30 states including Georgia, New Jersey and California with the most recent outbreak in Florida. As of May 31, 2017, Florida has encountered seven cases of Canine Influenza virus.

Dogs are at a higher risk of contracting Canine influenza in boarding kennels, grooming salons, and other group pet settings. Our goal is to always provide a virus free environment to our clients. Therefore, effective June 1, 2017, Lone Mountain Animal Hospital will now require all canine boarding clients to be vaccinated for canine influenza.
