Please give a warm welcome to Pegah, the newest extern to join the team at Lone Mountain Animal Hospital!

Pegah is a fourth-year veterinary medical student at St. George’s University, located on the island of Grenada in the West Indies. She is expected to graduate in January 2022. Pegah is from the Washington, D.C. area and said she initially saw herself going to dental school. She worked as a dental assistant for a number of years until she realized she didn’t want a career in human dentistry.

“I got a job at a veterinary hospital working as an assistant, and I did that for about five or six years,” Pegah said. She bounced around in different positions at the animal hospital before applying to vet school.

Before attending St. George’s University, Pegah graduated with a Bachelor’s in Biology from George Mason University (GMU), located in Fairfax, Virginia. She started working at the animal hospital after she graduated from GMU. Pegah also gained additional experience in animal medicine by volunteering with the Humane Rescue Alliance in D.C., where she worked as a technician for six months.

Pegah said she’s most interested in emergency medicine and internal medicine. She also said she has a love for exotic animals after spending two weeks in South Africa for a conservation course. After she graduates, Pegah hopes to work in emergency medicine while still working with exotics.

She heard about the externship program from Eve, her roommate at St. George’s, and a former extern at Lone Mountain. Pegah said she liked how the program included exotics, which furthered her interest in applying. Now that she’s here for her externship, Pegah said she’s most looking forward to having more experience with exotics since many clinics don’t offer that service.

“Plus, I wanted to expand my horizons a little,” she added.

In her spare time, Pegah enjoys traveling, cooking, baking, hiking, and playing volleyball. She has an orange tabby cat that she adopted in Grenada named Pico de Gato, or “Pico” for short.

Welcome to the team, Pegah! We’re excited to have you on board!
